RASA’s General Manager was interviewed by Informe Operadores de Mercado magazine in its August 2026 edition. With this article, we officially launch RASA’s new digital presence: over 30 years of experience, the same solid foundation as always, and a clear focus on the future of the Argentine reinsurance market.

In the second half of August, the specialized trade publication Informe Operadores de Mercado featured Jesús Oscar Prieto, General Manager of Reaseguradores Argentinos S.A. (RASA), on its cover. The in-depth technical interview covers the main challenges facing the local reinsurance market in the current economic landscape. We are using this coverage as an opportunity to formally launch our website and share the key points of that conversation with the market.

A market in a strengthening phase

Prieto sees the Argentine reinsurance market going through a period of increased retention capacity, though structural limits remain. “The decline in cession levels and the recovery of reinsurers’ results indicate that the market is better positioned to absorb a growing share of risks,” he notes. The international environment — with greater capital availability and competition — also contributes to structuring more efficient programs for Argentine insurers. High-severity risks, accumulated exposures, and large facultative placements still require access to international capacity, and that is where technical coordination makes the difference.

From regulatory easing to operational modernization

Following the recent elimination of the Foreign Beneficiary Registry (SSN Resolution 291/2026), Prieto identifies three outstanding technical challenges: comprehensive digitalization of the cession process, faster availability of technical information, and more automated counterparty management and compliance. “The next step should be moving from regulatory easing to true operational modernization,” he concludes.

The principles behind RASA’s contracts

On structuring proportional and non-proportional contracts, the General Manager is clear: the starting point should not be available capacity, but the true risk distribution and the volatility each cedant needs to transfer. “At RASA we have built a relationship with each cedant through contracts tailored to their individual development and growth decisions, which is why many of them continue to work with us and remain loyal.”

“The true differentiator of a local reinsurer lies in combining knowledge of the Argentine market, speed of decision-making, and technical proximity.”

Investment, capital, and climate risks

On the investment side, RASA prioritizes capital preservation and liquidity over short-term returns. The strategy seeks a balance between security, liquidity, and profitability, with strict concentration limits. Faced with the rise in extreme weather events — including the Bahía Blanca flooding, in which RASA was actively involved — the company uses retrocession as a protection mechanism, backed by admitted retrocessionaires of the highest standing, both nationally and internationally.

The lines with the greatest potential in Argentina

From a technical standpoint, Prieto identifies four segments that will require increased reinsurance support in the coming years: agricultural and climate risks; industrial fire and large property risks; cyber risks — “the leading business risk in Argentina in 2026,” he notes — and civil liability and financial lines.

Regional expansion and next steps

Looking ahead, RASA is evaluating neighboring markets such as Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia, with a gradual and selective approach that preserves the company’s historical profile. Next steps include deepening its positioning as a fast-response local reinsurer, strengthening relationships with cedants and brokers, and building greater analytical and technological capacity. “The ultimate goal is for the company to consolidate a position as a national reference with regional reach — able to compete with global operators not through size, but through market knowledge, technical flexibility, and quality of service.”
